We let Willow cut her hair. When you have a little girl, it’s like how can you teach her that you’re in control of her body? If I teach her that I’m in charge of whether or not she can touch her hair, she’s going to replace me with some other man when she goes out in the world. She can’t cut my hair but that’s her hair. She has got to have command of her body. So when she goes out into the world, she’s going out with a command that it is hers. She is used to making those decisions herself. We try to keep giving them those decisions until they can hold the full weight of their lives.

- He raises a really great point. What would it mean to believe very early that my body was mine. That it’s not for anyone or for any particular purpose other than to be mine until I decide otherwise.

I was damned near 30 before I could believe my body belonged to me & me alone. Dear people who take an issue with this,

Let the Smiths do right by their babies & shut the fuck up about how you think they should parent.

This is amazing. I never thought about it, but my mum controlled what I looked like very closely till I was about six, when immediately the pink & skirts & delicate shoes disappeared, to be quickly replaced by jeans whose knees tore within weeks, heavy construction-style boots, or pink converses, or rubber shoes that you could wear into water (since i waded into creeks all the time).

she never let me cut my hair till i was twelve. and then she kept my hair, when i’ve asked her to donate it to LFL, i think she still has it. and i think the more she let me take autonomy of myself, she got a little sadder, that i wasn’t exactly the person she tried to make me, but still pleased that my decisions seemed pretty reasonable.

mm i’m letting mein herr cut my hair tonight.

I love my parents very much but they never let me grow my hair except for one summer (I was playing soccer that summer and long hair was popular among soccer kids), and I wish I could go back and tell them how much being forced to get a haircut hurt.

‘It is crazy how hard it is for most dudes to understand this. How they’re like, “I would love it if people told me how hot I was all the time.” How they tell you, “You should be flattered.” I feel like boys need to be educated about this from a young age! On what it means to be leered at and touched way before you’re even equipped to understand what’s going on, and how that makes you feel shame and guilt and finally anger for the rest of your life.’
